Responding to the prevailing economic challenges faced by residents, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, unveiled a multifaceted intervention program named EKO CARES on April 24, 2024.
The initiative aims to ease the burden on Lagosians across various sectors, including transportation, education, health, and agriculture.
Governor Sanwo-Olu elaborated on the specifics of the program, highlighting its effectiveness in mitigating the impact of economic hardship on the populace.
Among the notable interventions is the establishment of the Ounje Eko Sunday market, which has witnessed a significant reduction in food prices by 25%.
The initiative has garnered praise for its success in providing essential food items at subsidized rates, ensuring that residents have access to affordable nourishment.
Furthermore, to drive the implementation of these initiatives, the governor announced the formation of a non-partisan Special Dispensation Advisory Council.
Comprising eminent Nigerians, including rights activists, religious leaders, a youth representative, and opposition party chieftains, this council is tasked with providing guidance and oversight to ensure the effective execution of EKO CARES programs.
In a demonstration of the government’s commitment to enhancing food security, Governor Sanwo-Olu distributed 500,000 boxes of foodstuff to Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
This proactive measure seeks to address food shortages and alleviate hunger among vulnerable populations, underscoring the administration’s dedication to fulfilling its duty of care to all Lagosians.
