Senator Reveals Alleged Hijacking of Government Grant Program in Nigeria

As the saying goes that wonders will never stop happening in a recent session with the Executive Directors of the Bank of Industry, a senator representing Ondo Central raised alarming concerns about the alleged hijacking of a government grant program intended to support Small, Medium Enterprises (SSMEs) in Nigeria. The senator shed light on a program initiated earlier this year under the name NGCARES (Nigeria Government Cares), designed to provide substantial grants of 3.2 million Naira each to deserving beneficiaries across the nation.

According to the senator, the program aimed to assist SSMEs and uplift grassroots communities by providing significant financial support. The initiative, which was set to benefit a minimum of 3000 beneficiaries per state, required the submission of candidate names through state coordinators. However, the senator revealed a shocking twist in the narrative, alleging that the program was later appropriated by state governments and renamed to reflect regional identities such as ONDOCARES and OYO STATE CARES.

Despite the noble intentions of the federal government to alleviate poverty and foster economic growth, the senator expressed dismay over the drastic reduction in grant amounts and beneficiary numbers following the alleged takeover. The initial grant of 3.2 million Naira was drastically slashed to a mere 300,000 Naira in Ondo state and 250,000 Naira in Oyo state. Moreover, the number of beneficiaries plummeted from 3000 to a paltry 100 individuals per state, raising serious questions about the transparency and integrity of the program.
